“Can I have a mentor?”

Posted on by Martin Corder

Last month, while participating in an event at North Medford High School, we met Camreal.

She is warm and welcoming, talkative and smart, and a uniquely responsible teenager. We were endeared to her immediately and our first impressions were confirmed as we got to know her better. A few hours before picking her up for our group gathering, she asked if it was okay for her to bring her son, twin brothers, and the two neighbor kids she takes care of after school. We were happy to accommodate any way possible so that she could begin making healthy connections with her peers and caring adults. I loaded her and the 5 kids she was caring for into my van and away we went to the youth center.

We had several new families in attendance that night so I took some time to explain our program and offered each new parent a mentor. At the end, I asked if anyone had any questions. Camreal raised her hand and asked, “Can I have a mentor?” We were so happy to be able to say "YES!" and to match her with one of our new volunteers. It is because of God’s great love and your generous giving of time, talents, and resources that we are able to make connections with amazing young women like Camreal. If you would like to be part of the work God is doing in these young families, please contact us.
